    • 1). Open Adobe Photoshop. Click the "File" menu. Click "New." Type "MySketch" into the "Name" box. Enter dimensions for the sketch canvas, such as "8.5" and "11" respectively in the "Width" and "Height" boxes for a full page sketch. Click the "inches" menu items for each drop-down, and click "OK."

    • 2). Click the "Pencil" tool on the "Tools" pane. If you do not see a small pencil icon, right-click an icon of a paintbrush. They share the same icon space. Click "Pencil Tool" from the fly-out menu.

    • 3). Pull down the pencil head menu on the toolbar, which is the second option from the left with a small number on it. Slide the "Size" bar down to "1." Even though you're using the pencil tool, Photoshop still makes you whittle the pencil point down to your preferred size. Click the solid dot icon in the list.

    • 4). Double-click the "Color Picker" at the bottom of the "Tools" pane. Choose a pencil color to sketch with, such as a charcoal gray. Click "OK."

    • 5). Position the cursor on the "MySketch" canvas. Draw by pressing and holding down the left mouse button, and clicking and dragging the mouse around the canvas.

    • 6). Change the thickness of the pencil using the "Size" slider bar on the pencil head drop-down menu on the toolbar. Change colors by clicking the "Color Picker" and choosing a new pencil color.

    • 7). Complete the image, and then click "File." Click the "Save" option to save the sketch.
