Spring training site

Goodyear, Ariz.

2009 record

78-84, fourth in NL Central

Manager

Dusty Baker, third season

New faces

SS Orlando Cabrera (free agent, Twins), LHP Aroldis Chapman (free agent, Cuba), IF Aaron Miles (trade, A's), IF Miguel Cairo (free agent, Phillies), OF Josh Anderson (free agent, Royals)

Biggest offseason acquisition

The biggest immediate impact will be Cabrera, an underrated force as a shortstop throughout his career.

Down the line, it will be Chapman, a Cuban defector with a 100 mph fastball.

Gone but not forgotten

OF Willy Taveras (trade, to A's), IF Danny Richar (free agent, to Marlins), OF Adam Rosales (trade, to A's), C Craig Tatum (waivers, to Orioles).

Best spring training battle

The back end of the rotation is unsettled, as the Reds are holding a spot if Chapman is deemed ready. And left field is wide-open race between Chris Dickerson, Jonny Gomes, Laynce Nix, Wladimir Balentien and Josh Anderson.

Projected lineup

  • CF Drew Stubbs
  • SS Orlando Cabrera
  • 1B Joey Votto
  • 2B Brandon Phillips
  • 3B Scott Rolen
  • RF Jay Bruce
  • C Ramon Hernandez
  • LF Chris Dickerson or Jonny Gomes, etc.

Projected starting rotation

  • RHP Aaron Harang
  • RHP Bronson Arroyo
  • RHP Johnny Cueto
  • RHP Homer Bailey
  • LHP Matt Maloney or LHP Aroldis Chapman

Projected bullpen

  • RHP Francisco Cordero(closer)
  • RHP Nick Masset
  • LHP Arthur Rhodes
  • RHP Jared Burton
  • RHP Danny Herrera
  • RHP Justin Lehr
  • RHP Micah Owings

Biggest strength

Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce are still ascending in their careers, with all three surpassing 22 homers last season.

Bruce needs to improve on his .227 average from last season, but he won't even be 23 years old until next month.

Glaring weakness

If the Reds had Edinson Volquez, an All-Star in 2008, the rotation would be quite good with Johnny Cueto and Bronson Arroyo (and Chapman on the way). But Volquez (Tommy John surgery) is out until at least the All-Star break, and with Aaron Harang taking a step back last season, it's an area that is vulnerable.
