Keyword research is at the core of internet marketing. Failure to do this part properly right from the beginning can result in time lost and a failed internet business opportunity. Keyword research can make or break an online business.

Also, if you are planning to do pay per click advertising, proper keyword research to discover less costly but effective long tail keywords could well save you a ton of money and it will get you some cheap website traffic [].

The best way to do keyword research is to use a keyword tool. If you have the money, there are many paid keyword services and tools out and you can view their statistics or perhaps research how they go about getting cheap website traffic with targeted keywords. But if you don’t have the cash, there is a very easy and very effective way to do keyword research with the help of the free Google keyword tool.

The best way to start is to come up yourself with a keyword that you think might be an excellent fit for your website and then type it into the keyword tool. The tool will then come up with many variations based on the keyword that you provided. What you should look for in this list of possible keywords is a long tail keyword (i.e. "chocolate brown Labrador", rather than say just "dog") that has a fair amount of searches each month and which has also has a relatively low number of sites that are actually optimized for that keyword. You can see the sites that are optimized for a certain keyword by typing that keyword within quotes in the Google search bar. After hitting the ˜"search" button, you will want to look for the results number just below the search bar.

To put it simply, a good way to tell if a keyword is good for targeting and that it will be easy for you to get ranked for it is to look at the actual numbers. Therefore by way of an example, a really good long tail keyword may have more than 1000 searches per month but no more than 20,000 websites ranking for it.

Based on this model you can determine how good or how bad a keyword is. Be aware that Google will return all the sites for that keyword, some of which may not be competitive due to eh nature of the site, but it is a great place to start your research.

Good long tail keywords are pretty hard to find these days because there is so much competition everywhere, but if you do find such keywords then you are just about guaranteed to receive some cheap website traffic. Not bad for a free resource!
